MILLENNIAL STOCKPILE IS AN INSTITUTION DEVOTED TO THE STORAGE AND PRESERVATION OF FOOD. THE STOCKPILE RECOGNIZES FOOD AS BOTH NECESSARY SUSTENANCE AND A CULTURAL OBJECT. FOOD IS FUNDAMENTALLY IMPORTANT TO SURVIVAL AND PLEASURE, BUT IT IS ALSO EPHEMERAL. THE FOODS HOUSED WITHIN THE STOCKPILE HAVE SHELF LIVES RANGING FROM 2 YEARS TO INDEFINITE. RAW FOODS ARE DELIVERED TO THE STOCKPILE, WHERE THEY ARE PROCESSED INTO THE FINAL PRODUCT AND STORED IN TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED VITRINES. THE MILLENNIAL STOCKPILE UTILIZES FIVE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND COMMON METHODS OF PRESERVATION: REFRIGERATION, DEHYDRATION, FOOD ADDITIVES, CANNING, AND OXYGEN ABSORPTION. OVER TIME, THESE METHODS COULD CHANGE AS FOOD SCIENCE DEVELOPS AND THE FOODS WHICH ARE MOST CULTURALLY PREVALENT CHANGE GENERATIONALLY. ON A LIMITED BASIS, THE PUBLIC CAN PRE-ARRANGE ADMISSION TO
VISIT THE STOCKPILE.
